He is known as the 'Father of Green Revolution in India'. His ancestors are from the kuttanadan village Mankombu, which is also a village of paddy fields. He introduced seeds of highly yielding wheat through years of scientific research. He got Raman Magsaysay award for community leadership in 1971. Professor Swaminathan is referred to as the scientific leader of the green revolution movement because of his contributions to the agricultural renaissance of India.
